Application:
Hi, I'm Luca Greenslade, and I'm a 17 year old ringer from West Sussex.
I have been ringing for 9 and a half years and was taught at Pulborough by the late Mike Etherington.
Throughout this past year I have been involved in leadership roles, notably:
Running my local practice night at Easebourne and Midhurst - I have helped my local ringers all progress and have increased the standard of ringing in the tower. Previously the standard of ringing was mainly call changes and occasionally plain hunt on 5, but I have helped the ringers understand and learn simple methods, to where our standard practice night now consists of Plain Hunting on 6, Touches of Plain Bob, Grandsire and St Simons & Martins Doubles. Being able to conduct in these methods, It allows me to help another ringer who may have gone wrong in a constructive way, and have managed to keep the band happy and always make sure everybody has a fair ring and offer ringers to try new things, as well as welcoming beginners to give it a go! I also regularly attend and support the practice at Chichester Cathedral as well as being a regular supporter at the district monthly Surprise Minor practice.
Being Team Captain of Sussex Young Ringers - Since the last RWNYC at Birmingham it has been my turn to be the conductor for the Sussex Young Ringers. We're a small group of friends located sparsely across the vast area of the county of Sussex. I have helped organise regular Young Ringers meetings, where we welcome any new Young Ringers to meet us and enjoy ringing with other young ringers. Notably we managed to score a full under-18 band Quarter Peal, of which I conducted, which was a fantastic achievement for the team. We have some more planned and look forward to practising hard for the next contests!
Organising Quarter Peals - I have organised many Quarter Peals and QP Day outings. These have allowed local ringers to achieve a first quarter peal or in a certain method. For example last November we achieved a QP comprising of a local Midhurst band, which has been a fantastic achievement. And also QP days which have allowed other ringers to try ringing new methods for the first time (mainly Surprise). Being in a very rural setting, it is often very difficult for most ringers to get opportunities to ring more advanced methods, so I am happy that I get to provide these opportunities to other ringers!
The award money will be a great help for me to not only help others but also to progress my own ringing. Not yet being able to drive, Transport is the greatest challenge in ringing for me. For example, it can be very expensive to travel to Young Ringers events which I lead, as well as travelling to venues for more ringing / Quarter Peals / Peals.
Thank you for considering this application for the Dorothy L Sayers Society Award.
